Perfectly Aged Gruner from Sonntag Geschlossen 2003-2019
It can get quite exhausting to know when to drink a bottle of wine. We answer that question daily here in the shop, over the phone and via email. Today, there is no need to ask, as we are excited to bring you the already aged, ready to drink Gruner Veltliners from Markus Sonntag. All on sale today through the weekend! Oh, and did I mention they are all under $45...
Markus Sonntag might be looked at as a computer scientist first and winemaker second. He has worked his family’s two hectares of vines since 1998 and upon taking over he immediately transitioned to organic farming. Since then, he has allowed grasses to grow tall into the vineyards, planted hundreds of fruit trees, and large swaths of grain to break up the vineyards. Most of the fruit he grows is left for the animals that graze his property. The farming is where his heart truly lies when it comes to wine - the business of bottling wines is much less exciting to Markus. For this reason many of his wines have been sitting in very large old barrels for decades.
The name “Sonntag Geschlossen” translates to closed on Sunday which is a joke to how business is done at the estate since most of the time the cellar is closed. It wasn’t until Markus ran out of space in his very old barrels that he first started bottling some wines here and there to make space for the incoming vintage. Stephen from Vom Boden describes this best, “wines are moved about with every vintage, a complex game of vinous Tetris, vintages blended and then reblended, so that things fit snugly into place, so that barrels are full and the wines are happy.” What this leaves us with is beautifully aged Gruner Veltliner both vintage dated and unique vintage blends that are ready for enjoyment. I recently got to taste the whole lineup of these wines and was truly blown away by the focus and freshness of each wine. These are very unique singular wines, that are expressive, and just fun to drink. They truly hold incredible value, while the only other winemakers that age their wines in barrel a fraction of this time are at least 3-4 times the price of Sonntag. Grab some today and begin to enjoy these stunning Gruner Veltliners!
