Les Terres de Phileandre by David Duband
Les Terres de Phileandre by David Duband
Small Negociant projects seem to pop up left and right these days especially in Burgundy. However, it is fairly less common to see someone with the experience like David Duband start a new project when his domaine has already had so much success. Beginning in 2018, David set out to work with new appellations as well as experiment with new methods in the cellar such as concrete egg aging and sulfur free fermentation and vinification. He named the new label ‘Les Terres de Phileandre’ after his two daughters, Philomene and Leandre.
David Duband took over his family’s Domaine in 1991 and by the early 2000’s moved away from conventional farming, as well as adjusting his work in the cellar to use less new oak, focusing on creating lift and brightness in his wines. What was once a Domaine making powerful, oak driven wines now makes wines of elegance, and this style continues through with Les Terres de Phileandre.
The first vineyard he acquired with a long-term contract was Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Serpentieres which has now expanded to include village Savigny-les-Beaune, Marsannay, and Hautes-Cotes de Nuits, and Aligote. Grapes are purchased from only like-minded vignerons- no herbicides or pesticides are used in the vineyards, and everything is carefully hand harvested, with sorting both in the vineyard and cellar. The wines are made with varying percentages of whole cluster fermentation and are aged for 10-13 months in 0-30% new oak depending on the bottling.
As I tasted through the entire lineup that is being offered today, I was very impressed with the clear vision and style of the Domaine as well as each individual wine. They can easily stand on their own, yet shine side by side showcasing individual terroirs and vintages. Anyone who is a fan of David Duband’s wines will appreciate the wines of this project that is highlighting a more modern winemaking style with finesse and elegance, while still making clean, beautiful wines. For me, this is one of the most exciting new projects in Burgundy that I have recently tasted. In addition to the 2022 lineup, we are also offering back vintages of Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Serpentieres both 2021 and 2019, with special pricing on a 3 pack of the vertical! This is an incredibly fun and tasty way to see the true differences between these three very different vintages.
