Fossile 2023 Chinon Les Battereaux
Domaine du Fossile is the new name for Domaine Patrick Lambert in Chinon, under new owners Moira Smullen and Chris Marshall. The delicious Chinon "Les Battereaux" is from 75 year-old vines on sandy clay soils over limestone. Hand harvested and fermented with wild yeasts, as are all of Domaine du Fossile and Lambert's wines, the "Les Battereaux" gets 12 - 18 months of aging in neutral barrels. The Guide Hachette gave it this nice review: "This very young estate makes its debut in the Guide with an energetic Chinon with aromas of red fruits and gingerbread. Rather rounded, the attack opens onto a mid-palate a bit closed and well-structured with firm tannins. The softer, supple finish leaves a long trail of fruity freshness on the palate. A lively wine that will quickly soften in the cellar." An awkward translation perhaps, but you get the idea - a delicious wine and sensational value!
