Beguet, Patrice 2021 Les Vins de L'Ame Ours VDF Fresh Impression Blanc
A blend in the "Big Bunch Theory" series, which connects like-minded small grower-producers in France, Fresh Impression 2021 is a delightful natural wine with intense energy and freshness. 30% Gewurztraminer from Domaine Humbrecht in Alsace, 30% Grenache Blanc and 30% Vermentino from Claude Ughetto in the Var (north of Bandol/Provence), and 10% Chardonnay and Savagnin from Patrice Beguet's vines in the Jura. Each grape plays its part, with none stealing the show. The Gewurtz is more about acid and lift than aromatics, as the wine is not dominated by floral aromas in any way (always a possibility when working with aromatic varieties like Muscat or Gewurztraminer). Most of the grapes are pressed directly, with 20% seeing a short maceration with skins. Fermentation is in stainless steel at low temperature and the wine is fermented, aged and bottled without any added SO2. The zippiness and precision of the wine is a testament to Patrice's vision and focused approach. We will note that the careful, almost entirely oxygen-free winemaking results in a remarkably living and energetic wine that will begin to become more muddled on the palate after 4-5 hours open, so drink it with friends over the course of 1-2 hours for peak enjoyment.
