Sekt for Springtime Featuring Lena
Sekt for Springtime Featuring Lena
There is not necessarily anything new about German winemakers making sparkling wines, they have been making them for centuries, but the insane qualities of those currently produced might surprise you. It can sometimes be a challenging area as Sekt doesn’t have nearly as many regulations as we see from Champagne, however I want to make a clear distinction that these wines are not attempting to be Champagne, they are terroir driven wines and are showcasing how excellent sparkling wines from Germany can be. Today that we are bringing some of the most thoughtful German Sekts around, all made in the traditional method and all delicious!
As an avid drinker of bubbles, I would be remiss to not shout my praises of the Sekt of Lena Singer-Fischer. Her family’s estate is in the village of Ingelheim in the northernmost part of the Rheinhessen. Here she has just 2 hectares amongst the family’s vines with her brother’s help day-to-day to farm as this is more of a side project from her day job (her brother makes all the estate’s still wines). Lena’s job is managing the family’s Sektkellerei which is a place that produces sparkling wines for many estates around Germany. She might be young, but Lena has an insane amount of experience in making wines. While most vignerons around the world do a winemaking task once a year for each harvest, she has created countless different sparkling wines made in countless styles based off requests from the growers who trust her to make their Sekts. By making such a wide range of Sekt for others, Lena has had the chance to truly understand her options for the type of sparkling wine she wants to make, and it is clear that she is making something special.
We have 4 wines from her today, including the very special release of her first-ever wine, Epos I, a Blanc de Blancs of Chardonnay from 2019 that was held sur lattes for 5 years before disgorgement in May of 2025. This wine has a beautiful intensity with depth, minerality, and incredible ripeness. A truly unique wine. Next is her 2021 Mythos, a selection of the best barrels that is a combination of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier). Aged for 3 years sur lattes with no dosage, the resulting wine is electric and incredibly savory. A sekt of texture and depth with a long finish. Lastly are a duo of Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs, both from 2022. The Blanc de Blancs is 100% Chardonnay, aged 24 months sur lattes with 3g/L dosage. This is a stunning citrus, chalky Sekt with a touch of spice and minerality. Perfect alongside food or just as an apertif. The Blanc de Noirs is a blend of mainly Pinot Noir with a bit of Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier) fermented in barrel and aged sur lattes for 24 months. A wine of ripe red berries and florals with great brightness.
Across the board, Lena’s wines are lively, precise, and are showcasing just how special German Sekt can be. Alongside her newest releases we have new arrivals from Peter Lauer, Weiser-Kunstler, Hild, and Moritz Kissinger!
