An Abundance of Albarino From Nanclares y Prieto and Bodegas Albamar
An Abundance of Albarino From Nanclares y Prieto and Bodegas Albamar
Though we at Chambers Street Wines are longtime fans of the wines of Alberto Nanclares and Silvia Prieto, it’s a rare privilege to be presented with the opportunity to taste a full lineup of 12 wines from the two. When I was recently invited to do so, I accepted with glee. Like any tasting of this sort, I walked in familiar with some wines, less so with others, and had first encounters with a few more. I can think of countless wines or winemakers who, for a time, really caught my attention and invigorated both my palate as well as a keen interest to learn more and “get to the source,” only for that desire to ultimately fade. Though I’m hugely grateful for those experiences, these Albariños are no such wines. For wine lovers, there are good producers, and then there are the producers who capture our imaginations and have a place in our hearts. Nanclares y Prieto are the latter.
There is such a present through-line in each of their wines, but never over-imposing (more on their approach to winemaking later). It’s as though the cuvées make up their own family: different personalities, maturities, even responsibilities, but soulfully connected nonetheless. This year marks the addition of a new member to the family in the form of their entry-level Blanco. It’s 100% Albariño sourced from a variety of plots both young and old, and full of easy-drinking joy. The ‘24 vintage in Rías Baixas, more specifically in the Val do Salnés, provided growing conditions for good ripeness and excellent acidity, something well reflected in the wines (plenty of them age-worthy). To those who are, like us here at Chambers Street, years into following these wines, I am sure this vintage will meet, if not exceed expectations. As for anyone new to Nanclares y Prieto, you’d be hard pressed to not seriously enjoy these special wines. We’re happy to be offering our full allocation with you today!
