Wash away your troubles with these refreshing summer sparklers, featuring some exciting new arrivals from all over the world! Included are two seriously quaffable bubbly wines from Strekov (Slovakia), some great Champagne alternatives from BXT (California) and Recaredo (Catalunya), and an array of fantastic fizz from Germany, Austria, New York and beyond! But first we are especially happy to welcome back a trio of delicious new wines from an old Italian favorite: Costadila!

Ernesto Cattel of Costadila changed our idea of what Prosecco can be 20 years ago with his Col Fondo wines in clear glass showing off vibrant colors and sediment- a far cry from 99.99% of Prosecco produced! Between the passing of Ernesto in 2018 and now, his son Arno Cattel has been traveling and working at restaurants in Copenhagen & Japan. Now he's back in his native Veneto continuing in his father's path and the current releases are drinking as good as ever.

While the farms and winery are based in Prosecco DOC, you won't find that on the label because the wines are spiritually outside (and beyond) the category. Their style is defined by old, wild vines farmed without chemicals or pesticides, refermentations in the bottle with fresh must, and no filtering or disgorging. Often you can see sediment through the clear glass and beautiful colors ranging from golden with green flecks, to peachy oranges. These wines have so much personality, feeling both unique and uncategorized, yet firmly rooted in ancient Venetian traditions at the same time. Like many ancient traditions, there is a function to leaving the sediment in the bottle as it provides stabilization and protection from oxidation. While not necessary with modern refrigeration, it happens to provide lovely texture, rich flavors, and reduces the need for intervention. They are refreshing yet complex, luxurious yet affordable, precise yet cloudy.

Today we have three wines, 330 slm Bianco Frizzante, 450 slm Bianco Frizzante, and Moz Bianco Frizzante. 330slm is the freshest, most weightless with a salty, grassy profile. It finishes bone dry, making this a very gastronomic wine with a fun frothy bubble. 450sml has a finer bubble and more lemon, tangerine, and tart apricot. Moz is the most playful due to the addition of Moscato Fior d’Arancio, making the wine scented with jasmine tea, chamomile, orange blossom, peach, apricot, and sea salt. It's hard not to have a good time when drinking Costadila, and we'll be sure to stock them all summer long!

BXT, or Bubbles by Tom, are some of the most exciting sparkling wines (or any wines for that matter) that I've tasted recently. What began as a creative side project of Tom Sherwood, inspired by grower Champagnes and the great terroir of California, has blossomed into a small boutique winery making incredibly precise and intricate Champagne-style bubbles which has now become Tom's sole focus. Born in Australia, Tom moved to Napa in 2014 with wife Brittany Sherwood, who is Director of Winemaking at Heitz Vineyard. Tom is selective in the vineyards he works with, farming some of the fruit himself at Manley Vineyard while working with a small number of farmers across California to source high-quality grapes from vineyards like Wheeler, Yount Mill and Bell Summe. Tom is committed to using varietals native to Champagne, beyond just Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He sources Pinot Meunier from Yount Mill and grows Pinots Blanc, Meunier and Gris at Manley with an idea to add Arbane and Petit Meslier in the future. All of this adds up to seriously unique and compelling wines that show all the crystalline purity of Champagne while reflecting California's distinct terroir. The California Immersion, his blended cuvee that utilizes all seven vineyards he works with, is simply stunning and holds up next to any grower Champagne, without the grower Champagne price tag. He also makes vintage and site-specific wines that show incredible depth and character, all in very small quantities. Today we are fortunate to be able to offer some of his 2022 Manley Vineyard Blanc de Blancs along with his 2024 Bell Summe Rose. These are each beautiful and intricate wines that offer a glimpse into the great potential of California sparkling wine, and I'm looking forward to seeing more bottlings in the future!

To add some more local flavor we've also included two outstanding sparkling wines from New York. Many of you are familiar with Chepika, a collaboration between Finger Lakes native Nathan Kendall and Chambers' own Pascaline Lepeltier. Their 2023 Concord/Catawba blend from is fun and delicious--think adult Welch's grape juice, but in the best possible way. It's a completely unique and special wine that many of our customers have fallen in love with. A new addition that is equally as fun and unique is from Silver Thread Vineyard, a sparkling rose pet-nat consisting of Regent, Lemberger, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Cayuga. It's a beautifully fresh wine that really blew us away tasting recently, textured and elegant but still refreshing and endlessly enjoyable.

I have included a few fantastic sparkling wines I recently tasted from Austria and Germany. The newest vintage of Soellner Pet-Nat is here, and it is full of orchard fruit and florals, the perfect wine for soft, summer bubbles that go down too quickly. Also from Austria is Jurtschitsch Rosé Sekt, a traditional method sparkling that spends 30 months sur lattes. The blend of mainly Zweigelt with Pinot Noir and Saint Laurent and has excellent notes of bright red berries and florals with impeccable balance. Lastly from Austria are a duo from Brundlmayer, the Brut Reserve is the perfect summer apertif, light, citrusy and bright, while the Blanc de Blancs Brut Reserve is 100% Chardonnay on chalky soils. It is a bold, rich, powerful wine that spends 7 years sur latte before disgorgement.  From Germany we have a few bottles left of the newest release from Jonas Dostert, Cremant Rochus Brut Nature #1/23 which is 1/3 each Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Elbling. This wine is focused and linear with amazing verve. The Muller-Ruprecht Pet-Nat Rose is new to the shelf, and the perfect summer sipper. And last but not least is a restock of the Moritz Kissinger Winzersekt Nr. 4 which I just couldn't resist including alongside this amazing lineup of Sparkling Wines.

Recaredo

Founded in 2019, the Corpinnat D.O has wasted no time in distinguishing itself as the standard bearer of Catalunya’s famed sparkling wine. Quality focused producers continue to join their ranks, leaving behind the more conventional minded Cava D.O. Leading this charge from the beginning has been the historic, Demeter-certified estate of Recaredo. All wines are aged on lees for a minimum of 30 months, and comprised exclusively of indigenous varietals from their own vineyards. The 2020 Terrers is yet another great release that delivers all of the power and tension associated with the Champagne method, while still evoking the sunny Mediterranean with its fruit and salinity. Still arguably the best value sparkling wine on the market.

Strekov

Zsolt Sütó is owner and winemaker of Strekov 1025, with 12ha of certified organic estate owned vines on the border of Slovakia and Hungary. He works on clay-loam soils with marine sediments, sandstone and limestone veins, and vinifies in open vats and old oak barrels of various sizes with no fining, filtration or sulfur added. Before Sütó was in the wine business, he was in the pumpkin seed business, and he still makes and sells pumpkin seed oil. For us here at Chambers Street Wines, these are the marks of a great winemaker operating on their own terms to produce excellent wines.

Based in the town of the same name Strekov / Kürt, on the border of Slovakia and Hungary, the wines (and the town) have a deep sense of identity. Being a bilingual border region with the history of WWI and the Hungarian Empire looming it's clear these wines are a niche of their own. Sütó's wines are highly personal with minimal intervention, it's clear that the intention is to let the land and the grapes speak for themselves, a true expression of time and place. The results yield highly energetic and expressive wines that have character. The sparkling wines we have on offer today, named Charlotte and Natalia, I found striking and unique, easy to drink while also having lots of details and depth, certainly punching above their price point for such a special place, wine and winemaker.
