New Arrivals from Italy featuring Monte Bernardi & Montenidoli

9/12/25 -

Today's NARF (New Arrivals Returning Favorites) brings back some of Chambers longest adored wines from Monte Bernardi, as well as Montenidoli, Punset, Muri Gries and Piemaggio. A mostly Tuscan leaning NARF with a sprinkle of Alto Adige and Piemonte.

-Monte Bernardi-

Michael Schmelzer has run the winery since his family purchased the property in 2003, and doing so biodynamically and organically. Located in the Panzano sub-region of the larger Chianti Classico DOCG, the area has a long wine growing history. The vineyards, surrounded by dense forests, sit on southern-facing slopes, 350 meters above sea level and about 300 meters north of the Pesa River. The hills are rocky, composed of shale, sandstone, and limestone. All the wines show a wonderful heartiness, though not lacking freshness.

Schmelzer has done more than anyone to lift the name of Panzano. To him, consumers should know the exact part of Chianti that the wine they're drinking comes from. He has referenced Burgundy, with its ultra site specific designations and tiered labeling, as a system suited for his own region. Monte Bernardi wines, and those of 18 other producers, now carry a marker that confirm their Panzano origin.

Montenidoli Vernaccia di San Gimignano Tradizionale 2023
This Vernaccia blew me away on my birthday this Summer after unexpectedly spotting it on a wine list in Massachusetts. Elisabetta Fagiuoli has dedicated her life's work to putting San Gimignano on the map. She has never sprayed pesticides in her vineyards and has been a friend to nature, evidenced by the wildlife that weaves through her home and vineyards. After buying the Montenidoli estate perched high on a mountain overlooking San Gimignano, she found fossils and white limestone in the soil and had the idea to plant white grapes, too. Thus was the beginning of age worthy, textural Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

Punset Barbaresco Basarin Riserva 2016
One of the best values on today's offer, a Barbaresco from a single vineyard called 'Basarin' in Neive. Basarin is characterized by its focus and balance, rather than power. The 2016 vintage is singing right now and showcases the elegance of Barbaresco in a near perfect growing season. Marina Marcarino farms her vines organically and biodynamically, then ages the wine for 3 years in Slavonian oak and another 3 years in bottle. This is the end of stock on the 2016, so grab one now if you're interested! We also have her Barbera 2023.

Muri-Gries Schiava 2024
Practicing Benedictine Monks makes this wine! While the winery was founded in 1845, the monastery itself dates back to the 11th Century when it was first a Roman Fort. Today, the monks focus on viticulture, and the Werth family focuses on winemaking. Their Schiava is a new arrival for Chambers St Wines. For a wine born from a thousand years of history, it is so fresh, bright and playfully peppery. A true testament to the value of native Alpine grapes.

Piemaggio Chianti Classico Le Fioraie 2022
In the heart of Chianti Classico, specifically in the area of Castellina, lives Piemaggio; a portmanteau of pieve (church) and maggiore (hill). They represent the best balance of fruit, minerality, and acidity that this historic winemaking region can offer. Their wines have so much more grit and personality than the mass produced Chianti of the eighties that affected its reputation in the US. If you haven't had Chianti in a while, let Piemaggio be your re-entry. They farm organically, ferment spontaneously, and are situated about 400m above sea level.
