Today's email celebrates the arrival of a profound and beautiful Chinon, the 2022 Bernard and Matthieu Baudry "Le Clos Guillot!" We first tasted this wine in February 2023 in the Baudry cellar - my notes say "2/3 cement, 1/3 three-year barrel, bright black color, pure, floral, black fruits, vibrant, not heavy, long, beautiful." Tasted again this past February with Matthieu, my notes are the same - "wonderfully elegant red and black fruits, floral ('great energy, enormous potential' says Matthieu) elegant palate, pure, long, gorgeous." The wine has density without weight, with a perfect balance of fruit and terroir, with incredible lightness and purity and a beautiful endless finish. Of course it's from a great hillside vineyard of yellow limestone, with the almost metallic mineral character of the fruit reminding me of the juice from St. Jean de Muzol in the Gonon's Saint-Joseph. Of course the Gonons and Baudrys are good friends, sharing the same ethic and the same mastery of farming and winemaking, enabling them to bottle such pure expressions of their terroirs.
On a crass commercial note, how many wines can you find that match the character and beauty of this wonderful bottle, and for what price? $46.99 - less 10% on 6 bottles - seems like a sensational bargain!
