Monte dall'Ora 2018 Valpolicella Classico Superiore San Giorgio Alto
60% Corvina/20% Corvinone/20% Rondinella. 2015 was the first vintage from this special 1.5-hectare site. San Giorgio is several miles NW of the home vineyard, on the limestone-rich hill closest to Lake Garda. The southwest-facing parcel of 25-40-year-old vines is a steep hike up to 500+ meters, completely isolated and surrounded by forest and other wild growth. As for their other vineyards, the farming is biodynamic and the harvest by hand. The bunches are destemmed and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur in concrete and steel tanks. Maceration lasts 8-10 days with manual punch-downs. The wine is aged for a year in a 25-hectoliter botte previously used to age their Amarone. It is bottled without filtration and aged 6 more months.
