Florian tells us that Lagrein needs a bit more heat than Vernatsch to ripen, so the vineyards are closer to the Valley floor south of Bolzano with alluvial soils. An inkier, more purple color with alpine berries, raspberry, a pine sappiness, a bit if a ferrous iron quality, silky blue fruit and violets- if you're thinking this sounds a bit like Syrah, you're right! The grapes are related. Drink with a slight chill next to grilled meats and game.
