Erggelet Brothers 2022 Malvasia Bianca
Julian and Sebastian Erggelet grew up in southern Germany, but moved to California in 2014 to pursue a career making wine. They began to release their own wines under the Erggelet Brothers label in 2019, utilizing grapes grown across Contra Costa County, particularly those from some of California's oldest vineyards. This is 100% Malvasia Bianca made with varying levels of skin-contact--about 50% of the grapes are destemmed and put into neutral oak for alcoholic and malolactic fermentation for over 30 days. Another 30% sees about 8 days skin-contact, and the remaining 20% sees just 48 hours on the skins before being pressed. There is no added sulfur at any point. It's a unique and fun style, with peachy fruit and subtle floral aromatics that refrain from veering too far into the overly perfumed variety. It has a saline finish and wonderful texture, one of the more unique and captivating skin-contact wines I've tried recently.
