We've tasted every vintage of this wine since the mid sixties - acidic and full of sulfur back then, we still loved it - and Evelyne de Jessy has transformed it into one of the great Chenins of the Loire. Terribly low yields brought brilliant structure and length to the 2021. "Perhaps the most famed lieu-dit in Savennières outside of the two crus of Roche-aux-Moines and the Clos du Coulée de Serrant, the Clos du Papillon has a greater incline than Les Caillardières, and more stony soils rich in schist and quartz. This was picked over several weeks, taking account of the age of vines, and the élevage was in barrels, for 18 months. A polished and honeyed nose here suggesting a silky intensity, and despite an evidently rich and perfumed style the palate presents a sense of direction and energy, with piles of grip wrapped around a core of focused fruit, with nice acidity and vigour too." (Wine Doctor) While enjoyable young, the 2021 "Clos Papillon" will be at its best from 2030 - 2050.
