Bosquet des Papes 2023 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes
The superb 2023 "Chante le Merle" is 70-86% Grenache planted in 1915 and 1930, with Syrah and Mourvedre from Mont-Redon (N-W), La Gardiole (N-E), Les Brusquières (N-W), Pignan nord (N-E), Barbe d’Asne (W), crushed, whole bunch fermentation of Grenache, 4-5 week concrete vat vinification, concrete vat raised 6 months, then aged in large old barrels and smaller young barrels, none new. This is one of the top wines of the very good 2023 vintage and will provide fabulous drinking over the next 30 years! " the bouquet has a red cherry fruit tart aroma, a smoky spike to it, breathes some local warm galet stone covered lands power (60% galets with 20% clay, 20% sand in this) lingers with intent, shows some class. The palate is mightily genuine, a very good bundle of prune, black olives, with walnut, and a note of earthiness, near truffle, has a late touch of lavender, is full of interest, very faithful to its origins, is bingo Chateauneuf-du-Pape of terroir, distinguished and striking. Gorse flowers, juniper late signals come through, delightful variety." Wait 5 years then drink until 2055.
