The Superb 2023 Burgundies from Jean, Gilles and Maxime Lafouge in Auxey-Duresses!
We've been enjoying the wines of the Lafouge family in Auxey-Duresses for 30 years. It’s a pleasure to have worked with three different generations at the same estate – or does that just mean that I’m ancient?
At any rate, we’re very happy to offer the wonderful 2023s – a vintage that offers beautiful ripeness and density and excellent brightness and acidity as well. Very enjoyable current drinking is certainly possible but cellaring of 5 to 20+ years is highly recommended for the village and 1er Crus. These are absolutely delicious traditional wines that will bring a smile to any lover of good Burgundy. We apologize for the tiny quantities...
Gilles Lafouge is the sixth generation at this 10 hectare estate in Auxey-Duresses. (He is now assisted by son Maxime) The domain includes excellent premier cru vineyards with old vines in Auxey-Duresses as well as small parcels in neighboring Meursault and old-vine plots in Pommard including the 1er Cru "Les Chanlins."

Here's John Gilman on the Lafouge 2023s:
“Gilles Lafouge and his son Maxime have made utterly stunning wines in 2023. Both their reds and their whites were among the very best wines I tasted on my entire trip! I know that Auxey-Duresses is not as sexy of an address as Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée or Puligny-Montrachet, but these are truly brilliant young Burgundies that will age exceptionally well and, in the case of some of the white wines here, also drink with impressive early generosity and complexity. The wines in January were all exceptional in quality, with the Auxey-Duresses Blanc bottlings showing beautiful purity, cut, minerality and raciness for the vintage. The two lieux-dit Meursaults were more racy and structured, both were of premier cru quality and among the finest examples of Meursault I tasted on this trip. The red wines here were also outstanding, with proper structures for long aging, great purity of fruit and seamless balance. This is a domaine at the absolute top of its game and if you happen to be someone looking for great wines in Burgundy that do not cost an arm and a leg, Domaine Lafouge is one you should become familiar with quickly!”
