Andrea Sottimano's Beautiful Barbaresco!
Andrea Sottimano's Beautiful Barbaresco!
We are so fortunate at Chambers Street to be able to meet and taste with our favorite winemakers! Andrea Sottimano visited the store back in March and we sampled through pre-arrivals of his 2023 Barbarescos as well as some back vintages. The wines are finally here, and we are so excited to share 11 bottlings spanning various vineyard sites and vintages.
I found the current release of 2023's to be very open, friendly, and drinking well in their youth. Andrea's clever pivot towards gentler extractions and briefer aging in 2023, as well as excellent vineyard sites are the key to this success. You'll also find noteworthy vintages in the collection like 2013, 2016 and 2021 (as well as my favorite underrated vintage of 2014!), all direct from the estate. In 2016, Andrea made a Riserva from his oldest vines in Curra to capture the finesse of this historic growing season. 2016's hallmark balance of elegance and power is on full display here with red fruit, plum skins, truffle, woodsy herbs, and well integrated tannins.
Andrea's 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo, 2024 Barbera d'Alba Superiore Pairolero, and the very fun 2025 Mate Rosso are not to be overlooked! 'Mate' is a one-hectare plot of Brachetto. Typically vinified as a sweet, spritzy wine, Andrea proves Brachetto makes a fantastic dry, still wine. Notes of strawberry, raspberry, rose, and salty freshness beckons fans of Pelaverga!
