Old Vine Wonders from Phillipe Jouan
Old Vine Wonders from Phillipe Jouan
The vines of Phillipe Jouan are old! From his 50-year old vines in his 'entry level' plot of Coteaux Bourguignons, to 70-80+ years for village and 100+ in his Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru, there are few other producers that come to mind when it comes to this level of vine age across all their cuvees. Phillipe's grandfather planted most of the vines selection massale and his father, Henri helped to pave the way both in the vineyard and cellars for what the wines are today. Phillipe took over for his father in 2004 and very little has changed since then. They are a small, but mighty domaine with just 4.5 hectares of vines, but approximately a third has historically sold to Joseph Drouhin. When researching for this offer, it seems like everyone has mentioned how under the radar these wines continue to be simply because there is only so much to go around!
For me, when I was thinking about this special domaine, the first few words that come to mind were traditional, rustic, and old-school, and I mean those all with great respect. In a time that it feels like we are all searching for the best new thing, be it wine or not, there is something special about allowing a sip (or whole bottle) of wine to transport you back in time a little bit. That is exactly what the Jouan wines can do. At the end of the day, there is nothing fancy going on here, just incredible depth and concentration from decades and in some cases, almost a century of good farming, paired with solid winemaking. These wines historically drink well young and old and hit well above their price.
My recent tasting of some of the 2023s from the domaine were exceptional. Incredible ripe fruit paired along with spice and an earthy edge. There's a perfect balance of fruit and earth with freshness that will keep you going back to more. I'm excited to share a fairly comprehensive offering of Phillipe's 2023s alongside a 2020 1er Cru Clos Sorbe!
