I was very excited to taste through the newest arrivals from Domaine de Chassorney, which was established in 1996 by Frédéric Cossard with a mix of leased and owned holdings near Saint-Romain. As he began to approach retirement, Fred formed a close relationship with local winemaker and friend Aurélien Verdet, with the idea that they would work side by side for a few years before Aurélien took over the estate. So, in 2019 the duo began the transition and 2022 marked the year when Aurélien assumed full control. While he is continuing with an undying commitment to organic viticulture and hands-off winemaking, the wines appear to have a bit more energy and structure to them than in past vintages. Having thoroughly enjoyed the 2022 vintage from Aurélien, I was trilled to get the opportunity to taste through a lineup of 6 of his wines when the 2023s landed here in the states and I was thoroughly impressed. Two of the standouts for me where the Saint-Romain Combe Bazin (blanc) and Sous Roche (rouge). 
 
The Saint-Romain Combe Bazin Blanc comes from 40 year old vines on clay-limestone soils. It is fermented and aged in large, used wood. The resulting wine is just delicious! Notes of lemon curd and zest, with strong minerality and a slightly salty finish. This had great balance and weight with a long finish and lots of freshness! This is fun to drink now with an array of seafood, vegetables, or poultry, or allow to age over the next few years. 
 
The Saint-Romain Sous Roche Rouge is from vines that average 40 years old on clay-limestone soils. It undergoes whole cluster fermentation before being aged in 228L barrels for 15 months. This is a fun loving Red Burgundy! It is full of bright red berries that moves towards a spicy finish. A lively, fresh red that is super tasty.
