Bertram-Baltes 2021 Ahr Spatburgunder Dernauer
The Ahr is truly unique as one of the only regions in the world where one can find pinot noir grown on steep slate soils. As a matter of fact, mostly pinot noir is grown there even though it is farther north of the Mosel. Bertram-Baltes is run by Julia, whose great grandfather started the estate in 1910. As per the importer Schatzie, she converted to organic practices and implemented natural fermentation focusing on the best sites with the oldest vines. Hailing from vineyards around the town of Dernau, where the soil is formed from weathered slate and greywacke which warms up easily and is able to store the heat in the south facing steep slopes. The wine is able to reflect this very particular and individual terroir extremely characteristically: a fruity and elegant character pared with a slight herby zest and mineral flavor.
