New & Natural - April 2026 Edition

4/17/26 -

While moonlighting at Freddy's Tribeca (a tiny, local wine bar across the street from Chambers St. Wines), I had someone very apprehensively ask if the wines I was serving were organic. I had to explain that "organic" only refers to how the grapes are farmed and has nothing to do with the way a wine tastes. I fell into a trap of then suggesting that maybe the wines they were worried about were the --- gasp --- natural wines, made not only from organically farmed grapes, but also with minimal or no addition of SO2. There is much more to explaining what is NOT done (inoculation using cultured yeasts, acidification, chaptalization, the use of additives like Megapurple or oak chips, etc.), but I didn't elaborate too much. I just explained that it is more of a philosophy and approach and does not define the taste of the wine. Some folks in the industry are afraid of using the term "natural," and have opted for "low-intervention" lately. We could pivot and use the term "Real Wine" that our own David Lillie and importer Joe Dressner used to use before "natural wine" was a widespread term. We'll stick with natural and will continue to do our best to put really good, delicious and pleasurable wines in the hands of our customers across the country!

Today we are offering a wide range of wines, including a bunch of new arrivals from France (don't miss the ethereal Hauvette 2024 Cinsault or all the new Loire Valley goodies!), some domestic favorites from Methode Sauvage in California and Usonia in Finger Lakes, NY, and a couple of rare Eloi Cedo wines from Mallorca. We're also putting a spotlight on the pure, soulful wines (with new labels!) from 2Naturkinder in Germany. All of the wines have been tasted and vetted by someone if not multiple folks on our staff, and we're really excited to have them on the shelves!

2 Naturkinder

I truly believe that in a lot of the best wines of the world, the energy of the winemaker is evident in their wines as you taste them, and that ideology could not be more truthful than with the wines of Michael Voelker and Melanie Drese of 2naturkinder. I was lucky to taste an amazing lineup of their wines recently while Michael was visiting New York, and was so impressed by the character, energy, and joyfulness of the wines. Michael and Melanie spent years traveling, and working in many different fields before returning to his father’s winery in 2013 to take over. Based in Kitzingen in Franconia Germany, 2naturkinder has a slew of less known or sought after grape varietals such as Bacchus, Domina, and Schwartzriesling. They make all their wines without any additives, and although 2naturkinder was intended as a side project for the winery, they decided to fully expand to take over the winery’s full production. Everything here is done in a thoughtful manner! You can tell when listening to Michael talk about his wines how each aspect of every wine was done with intention; from the blend of grapes to the time on the skins (when applicable) and even the labels. In addition to their organic farming, they have added bat boxes to some of the vineyards to get guano from the bats which is then used as a fertilizer in the vineyard. On certain wines they give part of the proceeds back to the bats via Landesbund für Vogelschutz (Bavarian Society for the Protection of Birds and Nature). At the end of the day, these are fun wines. They have a singularity, each being quite different from one another yet still each carry incredible texture, and joy. I don’t know if you could drink any of these without smiling because they are just that playful and delicious. Just in time for summer we have a selection of sparkling, white, orange, and reds from Michael and Melanie to share with you today!
