New Arrivals from Kissinger-Bähr!

3/6/26 -

I was first introduced to the wines of Moritz Kissinger when they were on the wine list at Koloman while I was working there a few years ago. I immediately was drawn to the utterly adorable lables, I mean what is cuter than a grape chugging a bottle of wine? But once the cork is open, it is evident that there is some serious winemaking going on here, albeit playful at times especially with the 0 Ohm bottlings, Moritz now along with his wife Jasmin are crafting truly spectacular wines.

Moritz is a fourth generation winemaker but just the second in his family to estate-bottle in the village of Uelversheim in the Rheinhessen. Moritz and Jasmin biodynamically farm 7 hectares in and around Uelversheim and in 2024 they added 1.6 hectares of vines from the famed Roter Hang. With this addition, they are now farming some of the most famous single vineyard sites in the region: Kreuz, Orbel, Hipping, and Pettenthal. From there they make TINY quantities of each single vineyard site as well as a pre-selection from all the crus called "Rheinriesling". Here you will see a slight change in label, a bit more serious tone as well as being named Kissinger-Bähr (from the 2024 vintage on, all wines will have both names).

The original vineyards are quite different, comprised of Chardonnay, Weissburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir, Moritz has made an incredible range of dry white, red, and sparkling wines. The sparkling contain a duo: one Blanc de blancs made from Weissburgunder method Champenois from older vines, and a Weissburgunder, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir blend that is part solera going back to 2018 (we have a few magnums to offer too!) The white wines start with 0 Ohm, a blend that is a fun, easy drinking, white with loads of energy, followed by single varietal wines of  Sauvignon Blanc, Weissburguder, and Chardonnay that are aged an additional year before release. These three are incredible representations of how excellent these grapes perform in Germany and are wines of incredible finese and power. Lastly is the 0 Ohm Red, bringing us back to a fresh, juicy, playful red that as temps warm a bit will drink incredibly well with a slight chill.

With such an incredible line up of wines, it is no surprise how the wine world has praised Moritz Kissinger. Stephen of Vom Boden notes, "Suffice it to say that both Mortiz and Jasmin have an incredible energy, a curiosity, a passion and sociability that maybe puts them at the center (or very close to it) of something that really feels like a movement of young growers in the Rheinhessen." It is clear that Moritz and Jasmin's energy and personalities show through in their wines, and that as vintages go on these wines will continue to shine.
