Mediterranean Freshness at Lamoresca

3/5/26 -

In the center of Sicily, specifically outside the town of San Michele di Ganzaria sits the beautiful Lamoresca farm tended to by Filippo, Nancy, and their son Simon. The idea started in Belgium years ago, where Filippo owned a restaurant championing pure, additive free wines. They returned to Sicily to start their own farm, which now covers 25 hectares of organically farmed grapevines, herbs, olive trees, prickly pears, and other native Sicilian flora. Situated South West of Etna and North of Vittoria, this area is quite remote- an oasis in the heart of Sicily!

Filippo, Nancy and Simon value biodiversity, evidenced by their continuous planting of forests with the aim of counteracting monoculture and cooling the area from climate change. Their wines certainly benefit, with heightened amounts of freshness, minerality, and energy.

I am a firm believer that the best wines start with conversations of farming first, then winemaking (Filippo is a master of both!) Spontaneous fermentation, no temperature control, and minimal sulfur use defines their winemaking philosophy. They make one white, a Vermentino di Corso, on clay soils which give the wine a saltiness, enhancing the aroma of lemon, peach, and herbs. My personal favorite is their Rosato, a traditional blend of Frappato and Nero d'Avola (with a touch of Moscato) from sandy soils. Cherry, watermelon, and violet almost tingle with energy and a slightly briny smoky finish keeps me coming back for more.

Next up are four reds. Nerocapitano is their 100% Frappato, a perfect wine for pizza night. Their Rosso is that traditional Frappato & Nero d'Avola blend- a take on Cerasuolo di Vittoria. The marriage of the two grapes creates a harmonious wine with the fresh red fruit of Frappato and the brooding darker fruit from Nero d'Avola.

Lastly, we come to Lamoresca's Nero Rosso and Elsa Rosso. Nero Rosso is 100% Nero d'Avola with concentrated yet cool fruit, anise, and tobacco. Elsa is their only wine to feature Nerello Mascalese, and it absolutely sings with strawberry, leather, allspice, and a fine tannin growing in the finish. This is their most age-worthy red, complementing the already fantastic lineup of fresh, vibrant wines. For all of the effort put into their land, Filippo and Nancy are delivering simply joyful and uncomplicated wines that always make me smile.
