Natural Jura Wines from Raphael Monnier's "Ratapoil!"
5/14/19 -
We're very excited to have our second shipment of extraordinary Jura wines from Estelle and Raphael Monnier of "Ratapoil!" A bit of explanation from Estelle and Raphaël:
"After ten years of work and pleasure in the vines as Ratapoil (slang for an amateur vigneron in the Arbois) the passion for wine took us and it was the beginning of our professional adventure in 2009. Our little domaine of 2 hectares, situated in the AOC Arbois, has been farmed organically since its creation. We wish to obtain very healthy grapes which require little intervention in the cellar. A living soil and balanced healthy vegetation are the two essential goals of our work in the vines. Our grapes are harvested by hand, and ferment with wild yeasts and without chaptalization. The wines are not fined or filtered and sulfur is rarely used, according to the needs of each wine. Our objective is to obtain wines that represent the terroirs of Arbois, expressing their minerality."
Another objective at Ratapoil is the preservation of ancient Arbois varieties, which are found in the cuvées "Le Ratapoil" white and red. The reds are produced by carbonic maceration, and are light, delicate and beatifully fragrant and are bottled with zero added SO2, as is the le Ratapoil Blanc. The superb Vin Jaune is from the 2011 vintage and was bottled in the Spring of 2018 after more than six years sous-voile.
(As with many wines with no added SO2, they are best consumed the day opened) Quantities are tiny, so please 2 btl maximum on the 2017 Partout. David Lillie
