A Trio of 2025 Pelaverga: Alessandria, San Barnaba & Maffrei

8/9/26 -

The 2025 vintage in Piemonte is already being talked about as an incredible, classic vintage. While it will be a few more years until the Barolo are released, the Pelavergas coming out now offer our first peak into the overall quality of 2025. Enough snow and rain early in the winter provided water reserves throughout the growing season. Spring and summer were balanced and vines were protected on hot days, and the fall was cool and breezy allowing for even ripening of the grapes. While its still early, these characteristics may mark the vintage as one to watch! Pelaverga is also a grape with only 20 hectares under vine concentrated mostly in and around Verduno, so it is rare to be able to offer three different examples from top producers all in the same day!

Alessandria 2025 Verduno Pelaverga Speziale

Pelaverga Piccola from 2.6 hectares between 250-350 meters: Riva Rocca, Campasso, Boscatto, Neirane, Sotto Orti, Galleria. Aging is between stainless and cement for 6 months. A beautiful light bodied wine with notes of pomegranate, strawberry, pink peppercorn & lavender. This Pelaverga offers us a sneak peak into the already buzzing 2025 vintage from this historic Verduno based Barolo house.

San Barnaba 2025 Verduno Pelaverga

San Barnaba has all of the ingredients to be an instant classic estate. Two brothers tasked with sourcing plots, Roberto & Giovanni Pasquero, teamed up with Francesco Rocca (son of Bruno Rocca) to make the wine. Fresh ideas & buoyant energy meet classic plots & old school equipment. Their wines feel silky, but not thin, and this Pelaverga is no exception. A tank sample from a CSW visit to the Serralunga based winery in April was already singing! Fragrant strawberry, raspberry, and rose petal with delicate tannins. Aging is all in concrete, a vessel they love for its ability to retain purity of fruit while still allowing micro-oxygenation.

Maffrei 2025 Verduno Pelaverga

This young duo are rising stars in their native La Morra. 'Maffrei' is a portmanteau of 'Mascarello' and 'Frei' for brothers. When we learned they sought out a long term lease in Verduno of Pelaverga, it made perfect sense, because their style is all about fresh, mountain breezy wines that are meant to be enjoyed young. Delicate florals intermingle with white pepper and tart cherry fruit.
