2017 Volnay Les Grands Poisots from Louis Boillot!
4/20/26 -

I featured some wines from Domaine Louis Boillot last fall but a few months ago Clément was in town and I got to taste with him. As impressive of a resume that he has, he was even more so in person. He is humble and filled with passion for his terroir and wines. That day we tasted a very comprehensive offering of the 2023 vintage, alongside a bit of backvintage Volnay that have just arrived! I am excited to showcase the 2017 Volnay Les Grands Poisots: a single vineyard site that sits on the northern boarder of Volnay just down the slope from 1er Cru Les Brouillards. Their vines here are 70 years old on fine clay soils with limestone and southeastern exposure. The wine is harvested manually and completely destemmed before cold soaking. During maceration they perform some punch downs and pump-overs. After about three weeks the wine is moved to barrels for 12 months in up to 30% new oak. A portion of the wines had been at the domaine since bottling, as Clément decided to hold some of the wines back for a late release, and now we get to enjoy the beauty of some bottle aged Volnay without having to have the patience to ignore them in your cellar.
When I tasted the wine it was incredibly approachable, super elegant with fine toned notes of cherry, cranberry, and a bit of spice, all without the bottle being open for very long. It has soft tannins with a lifted freshness. This is drinking beautifully now but will continue to age over the next 5+ years. Have I mentioned yet that this wine is just $85 a bottle? On top of this already being such a great deal for aged Volnay, we are offering an additional $10 off per bottle when you buy 6 or more. Enough to try a bottle (or two) when it first arrives, and enough to watch it continue to age for the next few years.
