Beck-Hartweg 2023 Alsace Bungertal
This is a blend of Gewurztraminer and Riesling grown on the volcanic sandstone soils of Bungertal, near the village of Nothalten. The grapes are macerated for 24-48 hours before a gentle pressing and natural fermentation in old oak, where it ages for ten months on lees. Bottled unfiltered and with no additives, this is a beautiful hazy straw color in the glass and is bursting with peachy fruit and floral aromatics without being overly perfumy. The palate is clean and taut with hints of savory herbs and spices, and a saline mineral streak that cuts through nicely. Subtle tannins and bright acidity make this an intriguing pairing particularly with Asian cuisine, as the vibrant fruit, texture and acidity would work well with spicy foods (particularly ginger as recommended by the winemakers) and the salty minerality and spice could match well with sweeter sauces. Overall a delicious bottling in 2023 and one that could continue to evolve over the next several years!
