It is by no means uncommon for winemaking duties to pass from generation to generation, if anything that is actually the complete norm. But today shows off two different producers from the newest generation of talented winemakers hitting the scene in Burgundy. One coming from a deep history in the region, while the others reclaimed their family's vines to begin estate bottling.

The Clerget Family has been in Volnay since 1268! In 1983 Yvon Clerget took over winemaking duties, but when he was prepared to retire in 2009 his son was too young to take his place so the family sold their grapes to Henri Boillot until 2015. That year, his son Thibaud took the lead of his family domaine at only 24 years old, he now represents the 28th generation and has already proven himself to be one of the top winemakers in the village. Since taking over, Thibaud has begun the conversion to organic farming, they do not use any herbicides or pesticides, and only spray with organic treatments when needed. An added key to the quality of these wines are the fairly old vines. Even his Bourgogne Rouge has 35+ year old vines, and this only increases as you move into Volnay and Premier Crus. I have been lucky enough to have tasted the wines of Thibaud since the 2015 vintage and year after year I am blown away by the purity of fruit and elegance in his wines. I tasted the new release last week and my feelings on these wines remains strong. They are elegant, beautiful Volnays that will drink well now and continue to age beautifully over time. 

The history of the Georges Glantenay estate only goes back five generations but they just began estate bottling their wines in 2014 when brother-sister duo Guillaume and Sarah Glantenay took over the family vines. Prior to then, most of the production was sold as grapes or wine in bulk. As contracts expire, they have taken back control of their domaine and now have 10 hectares of vines across 16 appellations, mainly in Volnay and Pommard. Of these 10 hectares, almost all the vineyards were planted by Guillaume and Sarah's grandfather Georges in the 50's and 60's so the average vine age across the estate is over 60 years! The Glantenay family has managed to capture the elegance and purity of Volnay perfectly in their wines. There is a distinctness from bottle to bottle as you move through their village to different premier cru sites, yet each wine continues to show the beauty of the area. It is clear to me that this is just the start for Guillaume and Sarah, their star in Volnay is just going to continue rising for years to come. After tasting a lineup of their wines recently I was immediately excited to offer them out to you, as they show off all that Volnay can be.    

Todays wines highlight the incredible talent of the newest generation to set Burgundy, and specifically Volnay by storm. As we move towards the holiday season each of these wines could make a perfect choice for enjoying over a festive meal, or as a gift to a wine lover in your life.
