Russo, Girolamo 2022 Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso (Arrives 6/16)

The grapes for this wine were sourced from the highest part of the Calderara Sottana contrada. Average vine age is 70 years old, and soils here contain more sand. I found this to be the lightest, most delicate red with underripe mountain berries, spice, and licorice and silky tannins. This cru is most often compared to Red Burgundy.

94% Nerello Mascalese with only 6% Nerello Cappuccio, this vineyard site in Randazzo is unique in that it lies at almost 700m above sea level and grows over sciare of two distinctly different eruptions. The vineyard is only 1 hectare, and is among Giuseppe’s newest planted making it full of power and fruit. Spontaneous fermentation followed by 18 months in used tonneaux and 6 months of bottle aging before release.
