San Fereolo 2019 Il Provinciale Langhe Rosso

Nicoletta's wines all tell a story and have a strong identity. Perhaps my favorite is 'Provinciale', a name which nods to the aristocratic Nebbiolo grape, but viewed from a more humble and provincial perspective. She also does not make a Barolo, although half of the fruit is from a friend in Serralunga, the other half from her native Dogliani. To her, the star of her estate and of Dogliani in general is Dolcetto. But do not ignore her Nebbiolo- she ages it more than Barolo and Barbaresco require and coaxes dark haunting notes from the grapes. This wine always has a little cherry cola note to me. The 2019 is a bolder vintage for the wine too, with stronger and tighter tannins benefitting from a long decant.
