With an abundance of incredible wine in the US, it's rare when a new winery you've never heard of stops you in your tracks. This is what happened with San Barnaba, and I am thrilled to have two bottlings, 2023 Timorasso and 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo available today at Chambers Street.
The circumstances that brought this project to life are a perfect storm for a legendary estate in the making. Two brothers from Roero, Roberto & Giovanni Pasquero, team up with Francesco Rocca, son of Barbaresco legend Bruno Rocca. The Pasquero brothers' real estate background gave them access to coveted plots in Barolo like Monvigliero, Serra, and Bussia Vigna Pianpolvere. The brothers give all cellar work credit to Francesco, though it's all hands on deck during harvest!
Following the momentum of first hearing about these wines, I was able to meet the Pasquero brothers at their Serralunga based winery in April. Giovanni and Roberto are some of the most energetic, creative and passionate folks. On top of their hospitality and buoyant personalities, the wines are incredibly focused. When they speak, there is an anecdote or reference point behind every vineyard, aging vessel, and piece of equipment. Low technology, no temperature control, and no filtering are a few of the old school philosophies giving life to this project. They even inherited their botti from Bruno Rocca!
This is truly one of the most exciting new projects I've experienced this year. We had the opportunity to taste tank samples, so stay tuned for new releases as well as their highly anticipated Barolo release!

San Barnaba 2023 Derthona Timorasso
This bottle blew me away when I tasted it with Giovanni & Roberto in their Serralunga winery. Pear, honey, yellow flowers and sweet corn creaminess on the nose with razor sharp acidity on the palate. A leaner style Timorasso at...

San Barnaba 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo
The Langhe Nebbiolo is aged half in wood and half in cement. Giovanni says the cement brings fruit and wood brings minerality, combining to a become a balanced wine with energetic red fruit, delicate red flowers, and a soft tannic structure.
