Stefan Meyer was in New York just last week and it was a true pleasure to taste through his lineup of wines. His farming philosophy since he took over his family vines in 2011 has evolved beautifully, starting immediately with strictly organic viticulture with certification in 2019, and as of the 2023 vintage is certified biodynamic. Stefan said, “Wine is the most fascinating and diverse cultural product we create from nature. For me, biodynamics is the best way to honor it with respect.” This care and respect directly translates to Stefan’s wines: clean, pure, fresh representations of classic grapes from the region. Two standouts for us were the Silvaner and Riesling Buntsandstein. The Silvaner is made all in stainless steel to preserve the elegance and fruit quality, full of white floral, orchard fruit and a hint of spiciness, this liter bottle will be perfect for longer sunny days ahead! His Riesling Buntsadnstein is classic in style, perfumed with peach and fresh flowers. 30-year-old vines planted on red sandstone and fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. This dry Riesling will become an easy favorite for the summer and beyond.
Ulli Stein and his fantastic wines need little introduction here as Chambers Street has been offering them for many years but two new bottlings have hit the shelf along with the 2023 release of the Riesling Palmberg Spatlese Trocken.
A special one-off project from Stein and inspired by the incredible quality of the 2019 Pinot Noir vintage, Stein 2019 Blanc de Noirs Sekt Zero Dosage Ulli performed just 1 pick for this sparkling wine and made 600 liters all direct pressed, left out the taille and then into 1 used barrel for a full year on the lees. Bottled in 2020 and disgorged in late 2024 without sulfur or dosage.
Although Stein has been making their Red Blend Cuvee X since the 90’s but this is the first year it has been imported to New York! A light red that is a blend of mainly Pinot Noir with about 25% Cabernet and a touch of Merlot.
