Liguria 2025
Ligurian Loves Featuring Wines from Bruna and Punta Crena!
Liguria is the gorgeous crescent shaped region just below Piemonte known for the Cinque Terre. It’s the second smallest in terms of wine production, but produces some of my personal favorite maritime wines. Pigato, Vermentino, and Rossese are all featured today by two historic producers: Bruna and Punta Crena. The region’s micro climate is characterized by its proximity to the Ligurian Sea in the South and The Alps in the North- colliding warm, humid winds and cool, dry winds. The land shoots up and away from the sea, vines are commonly terraced due to the sharp elevation gain and can only be hand harvested. If you are looking for racy, mineral, and unpretentious wines to drink this Summer, search no further!
Bruna
Winemakers Francesca and Roberto of Bruna are synonymous with the grape Pigato. They farm 7.5 hectares in the Arroscia Valley of Western Liguria 200-300 meters above sea level. Pigato is a grape often compared to Vermentino, while they are very similar (and some say genetically identical), they deliver different wines and even ripen at different rates. If you like Vermentino or Muscadet, it’s safe to say you would enjoy Pigato. Liguria is known for wild growing fragrant herbs, and their wines reflect this aroma and beauty while old vines deliver so much depth and concentration. Fish, trofie al pesto, focaccia with olives, and chickpea fritters are all natural regional pairings. Today we are offering two Pigato: ‘Maje’ and the extremely limited ‘U Baccan’.
Punta Crena
Punta Crena has been in production for 500 years! All of the Ruffino family’s vines are within 1200m (¾ mile) of the water in the town of Varigotta slightly more East from Bruna. The ‘Punta Crena’ is a small peninsula which juts into the Ligurian Sea. While The Ruffinos do not claim titles like ‘natural’ or ‘organic’, they have been farming and vinifying with minimalistic techniques passed through generations- the very practices the modern natural wine movement aspires to! Today we are offering their Vermentino and Rossese, a crisp, salty easy drinking white and a light peppery red.
