Incredible New Burgundies on the Shelf
Incredible New Burgundies on the Shelf
As many know by now, I often love to write a full profile on a winemaker, but this week small allocations from three winemakers all arrived around the same time and instead of picking one I figured why not showcase them all! All three of these winemakers are making terroir driven White Burgundies (with a few reds) ranging from Aligote and Bourgogne Blanc to village and premier crus from Chasssagne-Montrachet and Meursault. Enjoy a deep dive into each producer below but the real enjoyment comes from popping the corks from these incredibly talented winemakers.
Simon Colin
With the 2021 vintage, Simon Colin inherited 2/3 of his father Phillippe Colin’s holdings. However, back in 2017 he started sourcing fruit in Chassagne, Puligny, and Rully. Prior to making his own wines, Simon trained under his uncle Bruno (Colin), was the assistant winemaker at Domaine Etienne Sauzet, and assisted his father in making the 2015 vintage at Domaine Phillipe Colin. Now making his own waves with ownership of his own vines, Simon farms organically with some biodynamic practices implemented along the way. Organic certification is coming next year with Simon describing his style as “modern” as he works to make wines with great acidity and less wood influence. Although he is young, Simon has already proved what an incredible winemaker he is, with nowhere to go but up! My experience so far with these wines has been incredible with the Aligoté and Bourgogne Blanc being some of the best values in white Burgundy right now while the village Chassagne punches above its weight. A second shipment of his 2022 vintage just arrived in New York and I would snag these while you can as there is not a huge amount to go around and the next vintage isn’t expected to arrive for a few months still.
Yves Boyer-Martenot
Vincent Boyer is the 4th generation vigneron and has been at the helm of his family domaine since 2010. When he took the reins, Vincent began farming organically and has shown a true dedication to the family’s old vines. His goal is to have balance and freshness in his wines with true terroir. In the cellar only indigenous yeasts are used with low percentages of new wood (just 30% in 1er Crus), minimal SO2, and no filtration. The resulting wines are incredibly pure! I was blown away tasting these just a few weeks ago when wines of similar quality are often much more expensive. I must point out how fantastic the Meursault Narvaux is, the sort of wine you taste and say "this is what Meursault is!"
Morey-Coffinet
Thibault Morey is the second generation at the Domaine that his parents established after separately inheriting vineyards. This family tree contains almost all of the Cote de Beaune “royalty” Morey, Coffinet, and Pillots. Names aside, Thibault has brought the family Domaine to new heights since taking over in 2009. One of the largest improvements he made was in farming, switching to biodynamic farming and receiving certification for it in 2015. Thibault says “when the vines are properly cared for, you can take everything from the skin to the seed.” His wines showcase powerful minerality, with a strong sense of terroir. We have just 2 bottles each of his 1er Crus Blanchot Dessus and Dent de Chien, both neighboring Montrachet and both made from less then 0.1 of a hectare, these are some rare, special white Burg!
