Nervi-Conterno 2020 Gattinara Valferana

The first thing to notice about the wine is the extremely open knit tannins that feel almost silky. The fruit profile is bright with fresh florals and sweet spices. Layers upon layers of seashell-y and iron-y material underneath frames this as a very special wine and representing the best of Valferana.

When we think of Barolo we think of 2021 as a better vintage than 2020- but the opposite is true in Alto Piemonte. 2021 was a devastating vintage with hail damaging most of the vines. 2020 was cooler in Alto and made aromatic and complex wines with open-knit structure.
