Everything from Bourgogne Rouge to Echezeaux with Berthaut-Gerbet!
The wines of Amélie Berthaut are those of great purity and finesse. Her vines are mostly concentrated in Fixin, but spread all the way to some of the Grand Crus in Vosne-Romanée! Amélie has been turning heads since she took over in 2013 when she was just 25 years old. Since then she has been refining her craft and making some of the most beautiful Burgundies around!
Amélie Berthaut is the 7th generation to farm her family’s vineyards in Fixin. This domaine includes all the vineyards of Domaine Denis Berthaut (from her father) and portions of Domaine Francois Gerbet (from her mother). But Amélie did not always intend to be a winemaker. She attended school in Bordeaux studying Sciences-Agro engineering which lead her to an internship with Agnès Henry-Hocquard at La Tour du Bon. This was the first time she felt completely immersed in winery work and to her surprise, she loved it, which lead her to adding a minor in viticulture. Her second internship took her stateside to Rudd Winery where she says how, “It was a great work experience: the incredible work ethic of Americans, the detail, precision, and hygiene in the winery. But I didn’t learn how to taste. I was told to punch down this tank, to pump that tank over, etc., but it was never explained to me why.” After graduation she went to Crater Rim in New Zealand to gain experience with a different approach to Pinot Noir. She spent 2012 split between Burgundy and New Zealand learning more about the family domaine. When she returned home for the 2013 harvest she decided it was time to speak her mind on farming and winemaking. Her father then handed over to her all the winemaking responsibilities. He was there to help and support her, but it was her turn to take the domaine to new heights.
When taking over the vineyards, Amélie moved everything to organic viticulture and made some changes in winemaking. There is an increased use of stems that vary depending on the vintage and the extraction is much more delicate. Instead of aging in tank or her father’s old foudres, Amélie obtained more traditional burgundy barrels using 0-30% new oak depending on the wine.
With such a large takeover in a fairly short period of time, Amélie needed help farming her 18 hectares, so in 2017 she hired her now husband Nicolas Faure as the head of cultivation. Nicolas needs little introduction, but for those who aren’t familiar with the up and coming winemaker, his resume includes working at JL Chave, Domaine de la Romanée Conti, and Domaine Prieuré Roch.

Since 1693 the family has had the motto “Bien faire vax miev que dir,” carved into a stone lintel at their home which translates to “doing right is better than talk” and it is clear through the wines that this is taken quite seriously.
