The New Generation in Barolo - Maffrei, Trediberri, Lalú & Philine Isabelle
5/6/26 -

While the landscape of Barolo is slowly evolving with younger winemakers adapting to a drier, warmer climate, the current releases are not lacking any finesse or joy. In fact, we have more hope than ever with these four winemakers continuing to push the envelope towards drinkable wines with bright acidity, fresh fruit, and mineral backbone. All the producers highlighted today either inherited plots and winemaking techniques from their ancestors or moved to the Langhe and trained with masters. While we are seeing a fresher, earlier drinking approach to Barolo, the wines are unmistakably terroir driven Nebbiolo.
Quantities are limited on many of these wines, so we've placed limits on how many bottles can be purchased, in the interest of giving new folks a chance to grab a bottle. While you may have seen Chambers Street write about most of these producers in the past, Maffrei is new to the shelves. To welcome them, we are offering a special 10% discount on any 3+ bottles of Maffrei through Friday evening. All other wines will discount as usual.

Maffrei
Andrea and Stefano Macarello (pictured at top) visited Chambers Street in March, leaving us with so much excitement for the future of Barolo! The brothers inherited a vineyard in Torriglione planted by their grandfather, as well as obtaining another holding in La Morra for their Langhe Nebbiolo (with the hopes of one day classifying this plot!).
They are doing elevage in stainless steel, playing around with whole cluster and carbonic maceration, and any use of wood is brief and only with large neutral barrels. This approach allows for wines which are ready to drink young, but I do see great aging potential in their 2022 Barolo Torriglione with the plots deep clay soils imparting layers of spice, cola, and herbs. 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo has looser sandier red soils, bringing freshness, elevation, and mountain air to the wine. Though the wine is friendly, it is not lacking complexity! Cherries, blackberries, olives, roasted figs and a linear, bright finish makes this a flexible pairing at the table.
They talked a lot about freshness, breathability, mountain air, and the importance of acidity. Their balance of youthful energy and respect for tradition will definitely make them a producer to watch for years to come!

Trediberri
The story of Trediberri is understood in their name, translating to "three from Berri" with Nicola Oberto at the helm. Most of their vines are in La Morra, with holdings in the special vineyards of Rocche dell’Annunziata and Torriglione. The site that they based their identity around is Berri, due to a desire to be part of the growing revival of this cru on the Western edge of La Morra. Berri was mostly abandoned in the 1960's but has been slowly replanted since the early 2000's. It's proximity to the cooling Tanaro River, pebble and limestone soils, and mostly Southern exposition create wines with bright fruit and firm tannins compared to other parts of La Morra.
Today we have Trediberri's 2022 Barolo del Comune di La Morra, a vintage with challenges to navigate like heat and drought. For this reason, Nicolà decided to blend all of their Barolo holdings into one bottling, making a beautifully balanced wine full of layers of bright raspberry, florals, citrus, and spice. This bottling is a reminder that fine wines can come from tough vintages as our favorite winemakers continue to adapt to our changing climate with poise.

Lalú
Another producer well on the way to becoming a rising star is Lalú, a dynamic duo made up of friends Lara Rocchetti & Luisa Sala, who actually trained at Trediberri! They worked together on a thesis designing a carbon neutral winery at the University of Pollenzo. After university they both gained experience working at wineries and in 2015 they were able to make their first vineyard purchase. Their employment of whole berry and whole-cluster during the vinification as well as the usage of concrete for aging vessels really sets their wines apart. These techniques add incredible fruit vibrancy which make these wines a joy to drink in their youth. Today we have their 2024 Barbera d'Alba, 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo and 2022 Barolo del Comune di Monforte!

Philine Isabelle

Philine Isabelle Dienger is a newcomer to the Piedmont landscape (originally from Mannheim, Germany), but her incredible passion, and her background working with Biodynamic estates throughout Europe, world-renowned pruning experts in Italy, and stints with Giuseppe Rinaldi and Giacomo Fenocchio have all led to an incredible story that we are just witnessing the beginning of! We highly recommend diving deeper by reading the thoughtful biography on the website of her New York importer, Polaner Selections. Feel free to click HERE to read more about this dynamic personality and estate! Today we have limited quantity of her 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo and 2022 Barolo Preda.
