The Lovely 2022 Burgundies from Jean & Gilles Lafouge in Auxey-Duresses!
We've been enjoying the wines of the Lafouge family in Auxey-Duresses for more than 25 years. It gives us great pleasure to offer the particularly beautiful 2022s! Very enjoyable current drinking is certainly possible but cellaring of 5 to 10 years is highly recommended for the village and 1er Crus. These are absolutely delicious traditional wines that will bring a smile to any lover of good Burgundy. We apologize for the tiny quantities...
Gilles Lafouge is the sixth generation at this 10 hectare estate in Auxey-Duresses. (He is now assisted by son Maxime) The domain includes excellent premier cru vineyards with old vines in Auxey-Duresses as well as small parcels in neighboring Meursault and an old-vine plot in Pommard 1er Cru "Les Chanlins." There is good vineyard work here with plowing and organic composts; vinifications are with wild yeasts and the wines age mostly in old barriques with a small percentage new. Never over-extracted or over-oaked, these are true wines of terroir that offer terrific value. Says John Gilman in The View From the Cellar "The white wines are very racy and transparent and offer up outstanding minerality and cut. Stylistically they are very similar to Jean-Marc Roulot's wines and are well worth discovering. The reds here are equally lovely, soil-driven and beautifully balanced wines with the ability to drink well early on and yet age gracefully for at least fifteen to twenty years."
Gille's son Maxime, quoted in Burghound: the 2022 growing season was "pretty hot but not overwhelming and to me the more critical variable was how dry it was. Thankfully we had a huge storm in June that basically provided the vines with enough water reserves to withstand what amounted to basically zero rainfall in July and the first half of August. The good news is that the dryness of the season basically stopped all disease pressure in its tracks so when we arrived at the harvest on the 31st of August, the fruit was both ripe and spotless. We picked quickly and brought in very good though certainly not high yields. Some wines had small amounts of whole clusters during the vinifications but not all of them. What I find so interesting is how a fairly extreme growing season could produce wines that are incredibly fresh and vibrant while maintaining the beautiful terroir transparency of classic vintages." - Maxime Lafouge
"It is a common refrain that it's impossible to find good value Burgundy but given the modest prices for which the Lafouge wines sell, it's immediately clear that is simply not true." - Allen Meadows
The wines will be available for pick-up/shipping approximately June 17. 10% case/mixed case discount applies!
