By way of due-diligence we were obliged to taste a bottle of the 1980 Montepulciano, and it was remarkable. If we had been tasting blind I would never have guessed that it was 44 years old. The wine is relatively full-bodied and very fresh and energetic, with bright berry fruit character backed up with savory notes of Mediterranean herbs and stony earth - altogether a very delicious, possibly profound wine.
