The Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet "Les Gras Moutons" is one of the most versatile and crowd-pleasing of all Muscadet! While 2023 was a difficult vintage in much of the Loire Valley, in Muscadet on the west and in Sancerre and the upper Loire in the east, excellent wines were produced combining lovely fruit with firm acidities. It's the best vintage for Domaine de la Pépière since 2019 and the newly arrived "Les Gras Moutons" is just a beautiful wine.

Les Gras Moutons is a great parcel on gneiss, in layers that permit a deep penetration by the vines, with sandy clay and amphibolite stones. The vines are at the top of a hill and on the south facing slope overlooking the Maine. (The name, by the way, does not refer to fat sheep, despite their presence on the label, but rather in local dialect, to the hilltop vineyard site.) This terroir produces lovely, classic Muscadet to drink young or after short-term cellaring of 5 to 10 years. Obtained from Remi Branger's family, the vineyard first appeared in the 2009 Pépière "Cuvée Eden" and was first bottled separately in 2010 or 2011. While a bit "softer" and more forward than the wines from granite soils, the superb quality of the gneiss terroir was evident from the beginning and the recent vintages from Rémi and Gwénaëlle at Pépière have been outstanding.

Here is Chris Kissack on the very lovely 2023: "This longstanding member of the Pépière portfolio is the domaine’s foray into gneiss, the vines situated in the lieu-dit of Les Gras Moutons, downstream in Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine. I like the incisive minerally elements I find on the nose here, as they feel classic and refined. The palate follows on in the same vein, light-footed, dancing along with veins of crushed rocks, dried citrus, thyme flower and fresh peel. Energetic, driven, wrapped in ribbons of acidity, this is classically styled, lively and fresh. Great potential." Enjoy this beautiful wine over the next 5 - 8 years.

2019 Chateau Thébaud
Pictured at the top of this email is Marc Olliver in the "Clos des Morines" vineyard in the Cru Communal of Chateau Thébaud. We visited the parcel with Marc in 2010 and it was easy to understand the quality of the site, with old vines on a hillside sloping down to La Maine. This wine has become one of the finest of all Muscadet - the 2014 is just a sensational wine that I am trying not to drink yet and the beautiful 2019 is of the same outstanding quality with a bit more density than the 2014. About 7 cases remain available...

2021 Jo Landron Muscadet "Les Houx"
This wine has been a big favorite of mine since tasting it with Jo maybe 20 years ago when it was called "Hermine D'Or."  One of the nicest of the gneiss-based cuvées in Muscadet, the pronounced mineral flavors in this wine make it fabulously food-friendly and extremely refreshing. The low yields and cool temperatures in 2021 produced a superb "Les Houx" (pronounced, more or less, "layzoo") and the price has remained reasonable for such a complex and vibrant wine!

2022 Domaine Parentière Muscadet "Vieilles Vignes"
40 years of organic farming and old vines on Gabbro soils produce this inexpensive but quite disctinctive Muscadet, with the intriquing aromas and flavors typical of this unusual terroir. As Ranggy says "immediately pleasurable with great phenolic maturity and beautiful acidity innate to the gabbro soils. The palate is rich and vinous with ripe pear notes giving way to a zesty finish. Another incredible value from the Ménagers."
