Gut Oggau Returns to Chambers Street Wines!

6/23/25 -

Gut Oggau has been on the scene in New York for quite some time now, having been offered here over the past decade. A recent tasting of this lineup reminded me of how fantastic, expressive, and pure these wines are. As we are very much in summer now, the freshness of this lineup from all styles white, rose, and red is perfect! Each wine is quite unique and singular, but there is still a nice thread from one to the next, a true familial connection.

Based in the town of Oggau in Burgenland, Gut Oggau was started in 2007 by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe. Prior to this project, Eduard made conventional wine with his father in Styria and Stephanie’s family owned and operated the Michelin starred restaurant Taubenkobel. When the time was right for them to start their own project, they restored a 17th century winery that was abandoned for 20 years. This was actually quite helpful as neglect allowed for all pesticide and chemical treatments to be washed away, providing a fresh start for biodynamic practices. When cellar work began, it was clear that each wine had its own distinct personality, so they decided to create names and labels around the personality of each wine. This led to a family, spreading three generations, all treated the same in the cellar, the only difference is the nature, or terroir of each. Each wine is a field blend from a single vineyard so you will rarely see the true breakdown of each grape but rather a natural blend for each wine.

In their own words: “We are proud of the uniqueness of our wines and our approach. Proud that our wine personalities move people all over the world. Nevertheless, our drive has long ceased to be solely the finished wine in the bottle. We see ourselves as agricultures, as creators of culture, as shapers of cultural landscapes. Our canvases are our vineyards. Wine is so much more than just a beverage.” -Eduard and Stephanie
