Fabulous 2011s from Domaine de Montille!

1/10/14

One of our favorite Burgundy producers is de Montille in Volnay, a Domaine that dates back to the 1800s.  Along with Lafarge and D'Angerville, Domaine de Montille produces some of the longest lived Volnays and some of the very best Pommards to cross our paths. De Montille's Rugiens "Bas" (considered a superior morsel of the Rugiens vineyard) is a benchmark of the appellation, as are their fabulous Les Pezerolles and Les Grands Epenots.  As with any fine Burgundy, these wines are available in small quantities and sell out rapidly. De Montille also makes a great Bourgogne Rouge; our allocation of Bourgogne this year was 24 bottles. (Read: grab some while you can!)

Etienne de Montille loves his 2011's.  He was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful these wines turned out; they are fresh and pretty with good phenolic maturity and naturally low to average alcohol levels. Because the stems were ripe at the time of harvest, he was able to use whole cluster fermentation, which contributes additional structure to age as well as aromatic complexity. The wines are open at the moment as well as focused, and have beautiful acidity on the finish. They are delicious wines that will drink well young and age beautifully. JBT
