Burgundy Weekend: New Arrivals and Best Values!

1/10/26 -

This weekend we're offering new arrivals from Domaine Chantal Lescure in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Claudie Jobard in Rully and Pommard and Les Champs de L'Abbaye in the Côte Chalonnaise, as well as our best value Burgundies from Jean-Claude Rateau, Céline Perrin and Guillemot-Michel. You won't find any "gottahaveit" wines from Cecile Tremblay or Domaine Rousseau (although Eric Rousseau is part owner of Chantal Lescure) but you will find beautiful Burgundies, all organic or Biodynamic certified, for superb enjoyment today and over the next 20 years!

Domaine Chantal Lescure
Domaine Chantal Lescure, is an important organic estate based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, proprietors of 19 hectares from Meursault in the Côte de Beaune to Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits. As we await the full range of 2023s we're happy to offer a small new allocation of 2022s featuring Volnay, Cote de Beaune "Clos des Topes Bizot" red and white and their superb Bourgogne Rouge "Les Verduns." These are the estates finest values and will all drink beautifully over the next five to ten years! These are full-bodied but beautifully balanced wines that cellar wonderfully - twenty-plus years of organic farming of course contributes to this as do the estate's slow fermentations with wild yeasts, minimal pump-over, bottling without fining or filtration and minimal use of SO2.

Claudie Jobard
Today's offer features not Remi, Antoine, Charles or François, but rather the superb Côte Chalonnaise and Côte de Beaune wines of Claudie Jobard! We've been enjoying Claudie's wines for almost 20 years, which now includes the best plots of her family estate based in Pommard. Her whites from Rully and Montagny show fantastic purity and minerality, with the reds from Rully having perfectly balanced red and black fruits with earth and spice notes - they are beautifully made, delicious and affordable wines. Today's offer also includes some of her tiny production from old-vine plots in Pommard, with a few bottles of the wonderful 1er Cru "Les Charmots" from vines that are 104 years-old!

Les Champs de l'Abbaye
Certified organic since 1999, and practicing biodynamic methods as well, Alain and Isabelle Hasard at Les Champs de l'Abbaye (pictured above) are making superb wines from their parcels in the Côte Chalonnaise, primarily in Aluze, Mercurey and Rully.  The Hasards prune for very low yields producing reds with superb intensity of fruit that remain relatively light on the palate and are balanced by bright acidity. The Chalonnaise Blancs and Rully "La Chatalienne" are far from the usual plump and fruity Chardonnays - these are real wines of terroir with subtle fruit, prominent mineral flavors and firm acidity somewhat in the style of the Chablis of De Moor. Of special note is their Côte Chalonnaise "Les Claveaux," made from young vines of Pinot Fin, from three different massale selections, with 10% Chardonnay. The palate is light and refreshing, but quite ripe, velvety and sapid in 2023 - really delicious!  The Hasards are retiring - 2023 is their last vintage - we thank them for their great vineyard work and vibrant wines!

Current stock of some of our favorite Burgundies:
Guillemot-Michel, Viré-Clessé  Relatively unknown and rarely available in the US are the unique and magical wines of Domaine Guillemot-Michel in Clessé where the living soils and meticulous winemaking create vibrant Chardonnays that cellar beautifully for 20 to 30 years.  Certified Biodynamic in 1991, the estates 6.5 hectares are situated on degraded Jurassic-era limestones with thin clay soils. The unique soils and very old vines (planted between 1920 and 1989) produce intensely mineral wines with firm acidities.

Domaine Rateau, Beaune  Jean-Claude Rateau was the fourth vigneron in France, and the first in Burgundy, to convert to Biodynamics, beginning with two hectares in 1979. Some of the greatest estates in Burgundy have followed his footsteps, recognizing the importance of living soils in the creation of great wine. A new shipment of these beautiful wines arrived recently including the classic Beaune 1er Cru "Les Bressandes" and the fresh and delightful wines from the Hautes-Cotes, not forgetting our favorite Beaune "village" wine, the gorgeous Clos des Mariages!

Céline Perrin, Ladoix  Domaine Perrin converted to organic agriculture in 2003 and received Ecocert certification in 2008. The 2023 vintage in the Côte de Beaune brought periods of heat, good ripeness and generous yields, and the quality at Domain Perrin is uniformly excellent due to the long-time organic farming and experienced winemaking, with minimal extraction and new oak.  The wines display the generosity and more forward fruit of the vintage in Burgundy, but retain the firm minerality, fragrance and purity typical of these lighter-bodied somewhat old-fashioned wines.  The 2023 Ladoix whites of Domain Perrin are extremely terroir expressive, with firm acidity, showcasing the limestone bedrock and thin stony topsoils in and around the ancient quarries.
