Brand New Champagne to New York: Alexis Leconte

8/28/25 -

Just last week I got to taste the full lineup from Alexis Leconte, a 6th generation Champagne grower from Vallee de la Marne, primarily in Troissy. The family began with a single parcel in 1870, and now spreads across 40 plots that make up 10 hectares. Alexis spent time in Alsace and Burgundy before taking over from his father in 2013. His experience led him to the belief that the base of good Champagne is a quality still wine, the effervescence is just an added bonus. Upon taking over the farming, he immediately began organic conversion with Demeter certification coming with the 2023 vintage. Biodynamic farming resonated with Alexis based off of the idea of trusting nature vs. attempting to master it. Additionally, geological testing has been done on every plot to understand the contents of the soil and best determine its needs. Based off of this, Alexis and his father have moved some plantings around in order for vines to thrive. When the grapes move to the cellar a similar philosophy continues. Cuvee and taille are not separated, lees contact is encouraged and there is a wide range of vessels employed. Alexis will use barrels, concrete, old foudres, or sideways eggs based on what he believes will compliment the juice best. All wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and allowed to cellar a minimum of 3 years for the Totem and longer for all other cuvees. There is no rush as Alexis says, "nature reveals itself in its own time."

Across the board these are powerful, concentrated Champagnes that still show an elegance with incredible drinkability. To welcome Alexis' wines to New York for the first time we are offering a special labor day weekend sale pricing on ALL of his wines. As many of you who frequently shop with us know we rarely, if ever discount Champagne so take this opportunity to sample all that these stunning wines we have to offer.

TOTEM BRUT

A wine that is intended to be a snapshot of the estate, a blend of 70% Pinot Meunier, 20% Pinot Noir, and 10% Chardonnay. The vines are in Troissy and Dormand with brown limestone soil on colluvium deposits and sandy and stony clay. The wine is vinified in stainless steel with indigenous yeast and aged in used oak barrels. 30% of the wine comes from a perpetuelle reserve and is aged in the cellar for at least 3 years. Stoney, and savory with great concentration of flavor! There is a nice rich mouthfeel that is big and bold while still retaining great acidity for the perfect balance.

LA TERRE MERE EXTRA BRUT

This wine shows off the history of the family estate featuring five historic plots around the estate and grown in sandstone and clay soil. This is a 100% Pinot Meunier that is vinified in sandstone jars and used oak barrels. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and blocked malolactic fermentation. This wine has incredible acidity with a beautiful fruit aroma of raspberry with orange blossom and grapefruit. This wine has a very long finish with an almost salty end. This is a very elegant champagne!

ARIETIS BRUT NATURE

A 100% Pinot Meunier champagne to express the right bank of the Marne from two plots in Vandieres. These are two of the oldest plots of Alexis' family, that come from his maternal grandmother’s side. The soils are sandy-limestone on top of clay-marl. The fruit here comes entirely from the 2018 vintage and is vinified in 400 liter barrels using indigenous yeast with no malolactic. This is a beautiful, salty, bright, lifted blanc de noirs with notes of granny smith apple and apricot. A truly chipper, elegant yet powerful champagne with a lot to give.

ARIA EXTRA BRUT

A fantastic Blanc de Blancs from a single plot in Troissy with sand, clay, and lignite soils. Aleixs’ father planted Chardonnay on this plot against the village tradition because he believed it would thrive at the site (and it does). This is coming from the incredible 2019 vintage and is vinified with indigenous yeast in cask. It is aged in the cellar for at least 5 years before disgorgement. This is an absolutely beautiful Champagne with perfectly ripened fruit balanced with a chalky minerality. There is a true brightness here with a really elegant finish.

AGEIUS GRAND CRU EXTRA BRUT

A stunning 100% Pinot Noir from a single grand cru parcel of La Fosse with a chalky hilltop and reddish brown clay below. This is all from the 2018 vintage and the wine is fermented with indigenous yeast with no malolactic fermentation all in 400 liter barrels. This has golden ripe fruit alongside wild strawberry. It is true balance of powerful and elegance with a lovely texture.
