Baudry 2022 Chinon "Domaine" and Great Value Chinons from Patrick Lambert
5/23/2024
We're sorry that the 2022 "Le Domaine" didn't arrive in time for our last Baudry offer, but this delightful and delicious Chinon is worthy of it's own email! As Matthieu Baudry says "Due to its generous fruit and its juicy character, this vintage is outstanding. The 2022s will keep for years, particularly those from limestone soils. 2022 belongs to the truly great vintages, alongside 2010, 2018 and 2020!”
In addition, we have just received the lovely 2022 Chinon Rosé from the Baudry's organic neighbor, Patrick Lambert - it shows the beautiful fruit of this great vintage in the Loire, with enough brightness and acidity for real refreshment this summer..
We've included other favorites from Domaine Baudry and Patrick Lambert, including the end of stock on the fabulous 2023 Rosé from the Baudrys, and the crazy value, juicy and delightful "Gourmandise" from Lambert (perfect with a light chill!)

The Baudry Chinon "Domaine" is always one of our favorite reds from the Loire Valley and it's a sensational value as well. All Cabernet Franc of course, a blend of 70% from a parcel in St. Louans near "Les Mollières" where the thin clay over limestone soils give earthy well-structured wines, with 30% from gravel soils near Cravant, giving supple fruit and freshness. Organic farming, wild-yeast fermentation, aging 15 months in 5 to 10 year-old wooden vats and cement with almost no added SO2. Tasted at the estate from vat in January of 2023, our notes are just one word: "perfect!" We love the unique combination of earth, mineral and old-fashioned high-toned fruit from the yellow limestone with the sapid, darker fruit and supple texture contributed by the gravel soils. The 2022 will drink beautifully as a young wine, but aging of 5 to 10 years and more is highly recommended. (We have a case of 2010 in our crawlspace "cellar" - time to start drinking them!) And we thank Matthieu and Bernard for their beautiful farming and wineamaking that produces such soulful and delicious wines! -David Lillie

This delightful Chinon Rosé comes from Patrick Lambert's 6 hectares of organic vines in Cravant, around the corner from his friend and mentor, Bernard Baudry. Hand harvested from 25 year-old Cabernet Franc vines on gravel and sandy clay soils over limestone. The 2022 shows lovely aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, citrus and rose; the palate is ripe and pretty with raspberry, citrus and stone flavors with nice density and texture, a bit more weight and ripeness than the 2021, with juicy acids, berry flavors and minerals in the finish. This is drinking beautifully now and will open up nicely through the spring and summer and will keep well into 2025. This is a fabulous value and highly recommended. DL
