2024 Josef & Philipp Brundlmayer Rose vom Loess

Over the past three generations of Brundlmayers, they have gone from a mixed agricultural estate to an organic certified, high elevation winery where tedious hand worked vines are valued. Today, run by Philipp, the winemaking is precise, and although the focus is on mineral-driven Gruner Veltliner and Riesling this Rose is not to be missed! The blend of Zweigelt, St. Laurent, and Blauburgunder creates a very fresh, fruit driven rose with hints of white florals. This is a fun, playful, dry and crisp rose that will go down almost a bit too easily.

2024 Prieler Rose vom Stein

Georg Prieler’s family estate in Schützen, on the western side of Lake Neusidl was once a historic farm dedicated to all different types of agriculture. In 1972, his parents focused in on quality production of grapes, mainly Blaufrankisch and Burgundian varietals. Since taking the helm Georg has taken the estate to incredible heights year after year, showcasing incredible, pure, and very serious white and red wines. Farming is taken very seriously as Georg works to preserve freshness and control alcohol in his wines when they are in the sunniest region in central Europe. His rose is 100% Blaufrankisch that shows off those sunny vineyards with beautiful ripe, red fruits. The palette is bright, refreshing, a bit salty-the perfect summer apertif!

2023 Markus Altenburger Blaufrankisch vom Kalk

The Altenburger family moved from Tyrol to Burgenland in the 16th century and have been farming there ever since. Markus is proud to be a grower and not just a winemaker. He believes that quality of wine is made in the vineyard, you can’t catch up once the juice is in the cellar. It is additionally very important for him to leave healthy soils to future generations. His vom Kalk Blaufrankisch is a blend of 7 plots in Leithaberg that are destemmed and macerated as whole berries for 7 days. Spontaneously fermented in a mix of stainless steel and wooden fermenters before being aged for 9 months in old wood barrels. This is a fun, super bright friendly style of Blaufrankish! Strong notes of cherry, with perfectly ripe fruit while retaining amazing freshness.

2022 Christina St. Laurent

The Netzl family has farmed the same village since 1650 and when Christina returned home to Carnuntum in 2007 she was concerned with soil conditions and nature in her vineyards. So, by 2013 she and her husband began transitioning to organic farming. After years of experimenting with low-intervention methods in the cellar, Christina began her own range of wines alongside the more classical ones she ‘inherited’ from her father. This St. Laurent is carbonically macerated in a very slow and cold fermentation. After 10-20 days the whole bunches are pressed and finish fermentation with native yeast. The resulting wine is incredibly playful while still being clean. It is full of ripe sour cherry, cranberry, and blueberry alongside a hint of spice and earth. Perfect served with a chilled on its own or with barbeque.

2021 Hanna Glatzer Pinot Noir Rotwein

Hanna is the daughter of Walter Glatzer, who not just helps her father at the family domaine, but also created her own label in 2021. She was studying pre-law before realizing she had a passion for winemaking and transferred to Geisenheim and slowly began making wines from her family’s certified organic vineyards. Her goal is to create playful, delicious, drinkable wines and is clearly doing that well! This Pinot Noir is drinking beautifully right now, with lovely notes of juicy red fruits and a floral touch. This is easy drinking and simply delicious!

2022 Clemens Krutzler Blaufrankisch

New to the scene, starting with just 1 barrel of Welschriesling in 2020 at 18 years old, Clemens is already beginning to make a name for himself. This past year in 2024 he was named Falstaff’s Best Young Winemaker in Burgenland. With all that said, I was recently introduced to his wines (as this is the first time they have been brought to the United States) and they speak for themselves. His family’s estate is located in the coldest part of Burgenland allowing for wines of higher acidity and more phenolic ripeness. In 2022 Clemens created a beautiful, fresh and juicy style of Blaufrankisch. His soils have a distinct minerality that shows through his wines with great purity.
