2023s from Messager-Germain!

5/12/25 -

We were very excited to introduce the wines of Messager-Germain after tasting the 2022 vintage from Adèle and Simon while visiting Burgundy last fall. Their 2023 vintage just arrived and along with it came 4 new cuvees! I was so impressed with the young couple and their first release last year, and I am happy to report that the 2023s did not disappoint.

2023 was the first vintage of  Adèle and Simon making the wines together and with that came an increase in production. In addition to the same line up of 2022, they added a Cote de Nuits-Villages 'Les Chaillots', Gevery-Chambertin 'Meix Bas', Morey-St.-Denis 'Pierre Virant', and Nuits-Saint-Georges 'Aux Herbues.' These are all negociant wines but the care and attention in the vineyard stays the same. During my visit, Simon spoke about how he believes it is all about the grapes, 98% is in the vineyards and just 2% is winemaking. He told us how, “there is no magic in the vines, it’s all work.” This translates to their focus on organically farmed vineyards and low-intervention winemaking in the cellar.

While each of these new cuvees might appear like simple village level wines, each of the lieu-dits are located in some of the best sites in their respective villages. 'Meix Bas' in Gevrey is just east of Les Evocelles and catty-corner to 1er Cru Champeaux. 'Pierre Vinrant' in Morey is at the top of the hillside above Clos Saint-Denis and adjacent to 1er Crus Les Chaffots and Les Genavrieres. There was great care and attention given to the wines that would expand the domaine.

Adèle and Simon met studying at Lycée Viticole de Beaune. After school, Simon worked for several winemakers locally, including Robert Groffier, before returning to his family domain in 2018. During this time Adèle traveled to work in Portugal, South Africa, and New Zealand. The couple took over the 1.5 hectares of vineyards of Bertrand-Messager from Simon’s parents. The two are striving to make the style of wines that they enjoy drinking.  In regard to their Fixin Blanc, she specifically asked Simon to make her a reductive wine and that he did! For the Coteaux Bourguignons Rouge they were looking to make a wine that could be served in local restaurants by the glass, something that was fun, food friendly, and ready to drink. This wine is incredibly aromatic, and smooth and somewhat limited as not too much makes it to New York, and we are bringing in as many bottles as we can!

On our offer today we have the entire lineup for 2023, however there are a little bit of 2022s remaining in stock with their importer so please reach out here if you are interested in purchasing some 2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay or Fixin Rouge!
