2022 Chantal Lescure - Meursault to Vougeot!
1/23/2025
We are proud to offer today the superb 2022 vintage from Domaine Chantal Lescure, an important organic estate based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, proprietors of 19 hectares from Meursault in the Côte de Beaune to Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits.
After being in the hands of the Machard de Gramont family for over 30 years, it is now the turn of Burgundy entrepreneur Jean-Philippe Girard to take over the running of the estate, in partnership with Éric Rousseau, from the prestigious estate of the same name in Gevrey-Chambertin, and new winemaker Fabrice Groussin. (Check out the new website here) The new team's goal is to bring Chantal Lescure into the highest echelons of Burgundy. From the Bourgogne Rouge "Les Verduns" to the Clos Vougeot, these are all wines that belong in your cellar! (Pictured above: Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Suchots")
[Eric Rousseau and Jean-Philippe Girard, new owners of Domaine Lescure]
Due to the efforts of winemaker François Chaveriat, now retired, the use of herbicides was stopped in 1996 and the estate has been practicing fully organic methods since 2000, certified since 2009. The estate has a very high percentage of old vines in a superb collection of parcels including .42 hectares in Vosne-Romanee "Les Suchots" and .3 hectares (yes 0.3!) in the lieu-dit "Montiotes" in the upper part of the Clos de Vougeot
These are full-bodied but beautifully balanced wines that cellar wonderfully - twenty-plus years of organic farming of course contributes to this as do the estate's slow fermentations with wild yeasts, minimal pump-over and bottling without fining or filtration. In an effort to highlight the subtle aromatics and terroir expression in these wines, sulfur-dioxide is used carefully, with the reds averaging around 30 mg/L of total SO2, which is very low for Burgundy, and the low percentage, and high quality, of the new oak used for aging also helps! Of course the Vosne "Les Suchots" and Clos Vougeot are the top wines here but Burgundy lovers should snap up the Bourgogne Rouge and Cote de Beaune wines, which offer superb quality and sensational value!
Our allocations range from 24 bottles of the Clos de Vougeot to 60 bottles for the Côte de Beaune and Bourgogne Rouge - some of the wines are drinking beautifully in their youth, others will benefit from medium to long-term cellaring - we hope you will try them, and we offer our congratulations to François Chaveriat on his retirement for his great work at this estate - and we look forward to upcoming vintages from the new team!
