2011 Hofgut Falkenstein - with Spätburgunder!

One of our most exciting German offers last winter (if not the most exciting) was the re-introduction to the US of the wines of Erich Weber at Hofgut Falkenstein, brought to our attention by Lars Carlberg. While 2010 was a bit of an outlier vintage in Germany, the year's high-acid character was perfectly matched to Weber's style, and the wines caught many people off guard; they quickly developed a fervent following both among customers and members of the staff, especially since they offer some of the best possible values in the crowded German wine market.

Last May, Lars and I paid a visit to Erich at his family's estate and tasted through the 2011s; we've forced ourselves to be patient for many months, but we are happy to report that our selections have finally arrived and taste just as good today as they did back in the Spring. As you probably know by now if you've been following our emails, the 2011 vintage is friendlier and more generous than the severe 2010s. Weber's dry and off-dry wines are really terrific this year, and we added a special wine that's in the US for the first time, his Spatburgunder. It really has to be tasted to be believed; fresh, bright, fruit-driven Pinot Noir from the Saar of all places, where 20 years ago they couldn't even get Riesling to reliably ripen. For those in seek of high-acid, terroir-driven wines from marginal climates, look no further. In addition to making such honest, singular and delicious wines, Erich Weber is one of the kindest, friendliest and humble growers you'll ever meet. He has no problem selling all his stock to his devoted local customers in Germany, so we're incredibly grateful he is willing to share some with us here in the States. Enjoy! -jfr
