Russo, Girolamo 2021 San Lorenzo Piano delle Colombe Etna Rosso (Arrives 6/16)
This tiny parcel is a special old vine, one hectare portion of San Lorenzo at 750 m above sea level. Giuseppe’s father Girolamo gave the vineyard its name, “The Plain of the Doves”, because these birds used to peck at the tastiest grapes here. And indeed, in addition to the other characteristics typical of San Lorenzo, the wine produced here is notable for elegance, style and grace. The wine is 100% Nerello Mascalese, aged in second passage 500 liter tonneaux and barrique for 18 months.
Old, weathered lava flow makes up the soils and the vines planted in the 40's are quite low yielding, producing stunning and singular wines. The 2021 is a study in the elegance, complexity, and singularity of Etna's wines. Only 750 bottles made.
