Mas d'en Gil 2004 Priorat 'Coma Vella'
The 2004 'Coma Vella' is a blend of 40% Grenache, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Carignan, 10% Syrah, and 5% Merlot, fermented separately and then blended and aged for 14 months in French oak barrels. The current blend has left out the Bordeaux varieties, favoring the local Grenache and Carignan, and retaining a small percentage of Syrah... This library release gives us a glimpse of Priorat of old, influenced by international varieties, and with more extraction and use of oak than the current approach at the estate. The vineyard here is a mix of red clay and red slate in a warmer part of the valley, giving it roundness, ripeness and soft tannins.
From the Mas d'en Gil website: This wine and its name are taken from the Coma Vella vineyard plot, the oldest one in the Vall de la Coma. Planted with Garnatxa Peluda (Downy Grenache) and Garnatxa del País (Grenache) together, this valley faces east and west towards the Mediterranean Sea. The place is blessed by the refreshing sea breeze, known as the Garbinada. 2004 has been considered one of the best vintages of Classic Priorat. Steven Spurier from Decanter has given this wine the best old world red of the year. And the Spanish PEÑIN guide consider our Clos Fonta as best red of the year.
